TL;DR: Getting good at contracts takes a lot of practice and effort. It goes faster if you have the right training. How to Contract’s membership gives you 30+ hours of structured courses, three certifications, and a searchable library of 200+ hours of expert training, 500+ playbook strategies, and 400+ tips.
Our goal at How to Contract is help lawyers and contract professionals build the judgment, confidence, and practical skill to do real contract work well. We built our membership to do just that. Here is what it is, who it is for, and how it works.
The Problem We Are Trying to Solve
Building real contract skill takes years. Most people figure it out the hard way, picking up nuggets from senior lawyers, learning from the deals they happen to work on, and filling in the gaps with whatever they can find online. Some of that information is good. A lot of it is not. Most of it is not organized.
The challenge for most people learning contracts is that the training is too general and high-level to make a difference.
Laura Frederick has a different way to train people on contracts. She describes it as structuring our training like you’d teach someone how to fix a car. We all know that that we’d be unlikely to learn car repair by talking about it generally. Imagine someone says, “See that car? You need to fix it so it works right. Don’t fix it incorrectly. Now go.”
Laura believes in focusing on the individual components, breaking each topic, subtopic and issue down into its part.
The other reason the analogy works is because it sets the right expectations about what you' need to put in to learn. No course or training program makes you a master mechanic. The right training, applied over time, gets you there years faster than figuring it out alone.
How to Contract’s membership does the same thing for teaching lawyers and contract teams how to draft and negotiate contracts.
What You Get
Our members get 12 months of access to three program components that work together.
Courses. 30+ hours of structured on-demand training on the provisions and concepts you work with every day. Laura Frederick spent years perfecting each of these courses, updating and improving them year after year. The courses cover NDAs, IP and licensing, indemnification, limitations of liability, goods and services agreements, and more. The Program also includes 20+ hours of live training each year, where members can ask questions in real time.
Certifications. Three credentials members can earn by completing the relevant courses and passing module-based assessments. These include certifications in commercial contracts, indemnification provisions, and NDAs. Each one demonstrates real expertise to employers, clients, and your own team.
The Library. A collection of 200+ hours of expert training, 500+ playbook strategies, 400+ practical tips, and so much more, all searchable. Sherlock, our library’s AI search function, searches for just the right video, playbook entry, checklist, course module, or other resource to answer your question. There’s no hallucination because AI isn’t generating an answer. It’s highlighting what the sources say and sharing the citations for those sources with every response. Every result links back to the source so you know who said it and can dig deeper if you want.
One highlight of our membership is our extensive resources on AI contract drafting and negotiation. We a two-hour course created by Laura and 60+ hours of AI-specific training videos recorded since March 2025.
Who Our Membership Is For
We designed our membership to help lawyers and professionals at two career stages:
Lawyers with contracts experience who want to refresh their skills and fill specific gaps. Our membership works for experienced lawyers and professionals who already know contracts. We have 100+ hours of niche topics available for you to study. Members get access to a comprehensive training topics that cover areas that you want to improve on. We offer focused training on specific provisions and the curated expertise of lawyers who have negotiated contracts you have not.
People in the early stages of learning contracts. Our membership works well as comprehensive fundamentals training for those newer to contracts. These lawyers and professionals may be taking on a new role, transitioning from another practice area, or moving from being a generalist to a heavier focus on contracts. We offer practical knowledge of how commercial contracts actually work.
Why a Subscription and Not a Course
Members get the most out of our training when they treat it as ongoing professional development, not a one-time class. That is why the price is annual, not monthly. Building real contract skill is not a quick fix. It happens over months and years of running into provisions, looking up answers, applying what you learn, and slowly building the judgment that experienced lawyers carry around in their heads.
Our training meets people where they are and provides the knowledge and advice to know what to do. We don’t replace real-world experience. Instead, we provide an accelerated starting point and a faster path to contract mastery.
